What we look for

● Proven academic ability

We look for applicants with academic performance (GPA) equal to or above 4 on a 5 point scale
as demonstrated by the student’s transcript, and satisfactory performance on the Secondary
Education Certification Exam (Şəhadətnamə imtahanı) administered at the end of 9th grade, as well
as extracurricular involvement (if applicable).

● Genuine intellectual curiosity and critical thinking

We look for applicants that exhibit intellectual curiosity and critical thinking in their academic life
and beyond. These qualities will be tested in their essays and during the interview process.

● Motivation and passion for learning and being a part of an international community

Above all, we seek applicants who are motivated, passionate, and ambitious about making a
difference in their local communities, countries, regions, and/or the world. Students are encouraged
to share how a UWC education will help them achieve their goals and ambitions when applying.

● Values in accordance with UWC standards

We seek applicants that show international and intercultural understanding, personal and mutual
responsibility, integrity, thoughtfulness, compassion, service, respect for the environment, personal
challenge, and celebration of diversity. These values will be explored during the interview process.

Eligibility criteria/Requirements

At a minimum, all applicants must:

  • Be an Azerbaijani citizen residing in Azerbaijan or abroad, or an individual with a right to obtain an Azerbaijani passport as defined by Azerbaijani law (https://migration.gov.az/en/useful/45);
  • Meet the age requirements given by UWC International meaning the applicant has to be born between January 2005 and December 2007;
  • Have a GPA equal to or above 4.0 (out of 5.0) as demonstrated by the student’s transcript and performance on the Secondary Education Certification Exam (Şəhadətnamə imtahanı) administered at the end of 9th grade;
  • Have knowledge of the Azerbaijani language (students are encouraged to share knowledge of any other languages);
  • Only submit one application per year to study the IB Diploma Program at UWC. Dualapplications, either through another National Committee or through the Global Selection Programme, are not permitted and will result in the candidate being withdrawn.

The applicants who meet the entry requirements and pass through all the stages of the selection
process will be offered a place at UWC schools by March 15th.

How to apply

All applicants are required to submit a completed application through our online application portal
or through mail.
 

Please follow the instructions below to submit an application.

All applicants must submit their materials directly - not through an agent or third-party vendor - to the UWC Azerbaijan portal available at https//www.uwc.az/apply. Applicants who are unable to fill the online application can send in their applications by mail to the following address: selection@az.uwc.org. The National Committee may contact applicants to check the accuracy and authenticity of all information and documents submitted. The National Committee holds the right to conduct background checks if necessary - any wrongful information leads to automatic disqualification from the selection process. If there are any questions, please contact the National Committee at info@uwc.az.

Deadlines

The deadlines for the Fall 2022 applications are:

  • Final deadline: February 11, 2022 at 11.59 Baku time.
  • Financial aid deadline: February 11, 2022 at 11.59 Baku time (for students who are selectedfor the interview stage).

Application checklist

  • Academic performance as demonstrated by the student’s transcript and performance in the Secondary Education Certification Exam (Şəhadətnamə imtahanı) administered at the end of 9th grade.
  • Essay questions (ten short and five long essays).
  • Academic transcript.

Students are encouraged to share the following documents if applicable (optional, no bearing on selection if not presented).

  • IELTS/TOEFL.
  • Academic and/or other certificates.

Applicants who successfully pass the application stage will be invited to the interview stage. The interview stage will consist of general and panel or group interviews. Those who pass the interview stage will be appointed by the National Committee to UWC schools. Some students will be waitlisted and may be reconsidered for slots at UWC schools in case of other candidates’ withdrawal or rescindment. Students will get points based on their application forms and the results of interviews.

Financial aid application

Financial aid in the form of full and partial scholarships will be offered to prospective students that
show financial needs based on personal and family income. Special consideration will be given to students from low-income families, families of refugees and IDPs, as well as those students whose financial circumstances were affected by the loss of parents, who are from the Nagorno-Karabakh region, etc. The financial assessment will be conducted separately to ensure that students are recruited on a need-blind basis.


The National Committee will make available X full scholarships (covering full tuition, onboarding, transportation tickets to UWC schools, and visa fees if relevant) and X partial scholarships (covering x% of tuition and onboarding) for the Spring 2022 Academic Year.

The process:
Prospective students should upload the following documents to the UWC Azerbaijan portal if they are selected for the interview process.

  • Brief letter detailing financial situation;
  • Supporting documents for parents’/guardians’ annual income, assets, and savings.

The deadline for financial aid is February 11, 2022 at 11.59 Baku time.
